This is about the gentrification, destruction and a major catalyst to the housing crisis and the criminalization of poverty and homelessness. In the lead up to the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. Several low income and supportive housing buildings saw mass evictions, street sweeps (where street entrenched people would have all their stuff stolen well they slept) saw huge increases as well as the constant harassment by both the city and cops. A lot of people were also rounded up and thrown in jail, the drunk tank or given one way bus tickets out of town with nothing but the clothes on their back. I remember people being dropped off at the old Safeway bus exchange in downtown Chilliwack as well as downtown Prince George in the dead of winter to basically freeze to death. Entire neighborhoods being dug up or displaced to build venues for a sporting event and a party for rich tourists. How nobody was talking about it and the city of Vancouver, police and olympic committees were trying to sweep it under the rug. Meanwhile entire neighborhoods are being destroyed and people are being forcefully displaced.
